Shilo Harris
Shilo Harris, son of a Vietnam veteran, always aspired to serve in the military. Following the 9/11 attacks, he enlisted as a Cavalry Scout in the U.S. Army. After his first deployment to Germany, he was sent to Iraq with the 10th Mountain Division. On February 19, 2007, his vehicle was hit by an IED, killing three soldiers and severely injuring him. Suffering burns on 35% of his body, the explosion cost him his ears, part of his nose, three fingers, and caused multiple fractures, lung damage, TBI, PTS, and survivor’s guilt.
Placed in a medically induced coma for 48 days, Shilo underwent nearly three years of recovery at Brook Army Medical Center, participating in groundbreaking regenerative treatments and enduring over 80 surgeries. He medically retired in 2010, embracing his journey with resilience: “Everything in life is a gift.”
Today, Shilo is a motivational speaker, inspiring others on overcoming adversity, leadership, and veterans’ issues. His memoir, Steel Will, details his journey, and his story is being adapted into a feature film.
